Maya is a lawyer, policy advocate, speaker, and writer, and she played a key role as the chair of her sister's 2020 presidential campaign.
Public policy advocate and lawyer Maya Harris delivered a powerful speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, making a compelling case for why her sister, Vice President Kamala Harris, should win the 2024 presidential race.
Maya began by reflecting on their late mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, and the values she instilled in her daughters.
"Mommy understood the power and possibility that come from embracing your true self. She knew we could be the authors of our own stories, just as she had been, and she wanted Kamala and me to have that same opportunity. That's a distinctly American story," Maya Harris remarked.
She highlighted how Kamala Harris, like many Americans, understands what it means to be an underdog in this nation.
Taking a subtle jab at GOP nominee Donald Trump, she added, "While some want to drag us back to the past, my sister says, hold up—we are not going back."
Maya concluded with a heartfelt sentiment: "I wish Mommy could be here tonight. I can just see her smiling, proud of Kamala. And then, without missing a beat, she'd say, 'That's enough. You've got work to do.'"
After her sister was selected as Joe Biden's running mate, Maya became a national surrogate for the Biden-Harris ticket.
Previously, she served as a senior adviser for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign.
